A rare antoninianus of Herennia Etruscilla
Lot 323
Herennia Etruscilla, Augusta, 249-251. Antoninianus (Silver, 22 mm, 5.02 g, 12 h), Antioch, 251. HER ETRVSCILLA AVG Diademed and draped bust of Herennia Etruscilla set on crescent to right. Rev. AEQVITAS AVGG Aequitas standing front, head to left, holding scales with her right hand and cornucopiae with her left. Cohen 3. RIC 64. Rare. A lustrous and lightly toned example. Virtually as struck.

From the collection of Yves Gunzenreiner.

The second G squeezed in at the end of the reverse legend indicates that the artist working on the die must either have run out of space, or that it was an old die that was reworked after the elevation of Herennius Etruscus to the rank of Augustus in 251. Either way, this is a rare issue: it was struck in the short time period between Herennius' promotion and his death in battle against the Goths in the same year.
